Beyond the Bell is an afterschool activities club for middle school aged teens looking for a safe environment to do their homework, hang out with friends, and enjoy structured activities.
Recreation operates three year-round indoor pools at Lackey High School, North Point High School and Donald M. Wade Aquatic Center Center at St. Charles High School. During the summer months, we also operate outdoor pools at La Plata High School, McDonough High School, and Thomas Stone High School. All pools are open to the public for recreational swimming with daily admission, punch cards, or memberships available. We offer numerous programs including swim lessons, pool rentals, water aerobics, lifeguard training, and more.
The school based Community Centers offer citizens a variety of social, educational, and recreational programs designed to best meet the needs of community members of all ages. The centers are home to a wide variety of programs including: arts and crafts, dance and exercise/fitness programs, afterschool programs, summer camps, community programs, special events, and many sports programs and activities.
Discount amusement park tickets are available for purchase through the Recreation Registration Office April-August. Tickets are available for the following Amusement Parks: Kings Dominion, Busch Gardens, Water Country USA, Six Flags America, Six Flags Great Adventure New Jersey, and Hershey Park. Prices for tickets are typically discounted 10-15% off the regular gate prices.
This state-of-the-art facility provides an unequaled facility for instruction in gymnastics and dance. Classes range from beginner to advanced, and pre-competitive and competitive teams through 10 levels under the guidance of the USA Gymnastics Jr. Olympic Program. Many general recreational programs are also offered throughout the year.
Recreation offers a wide variety of sports classes, leagues, and events year round for youth and adult players helping them to stay in shape or learn the essential fundamentals of the game. Sports offered include volleyball, basketball, softball, kickball, pickleball and soccer.
Special Olympics Maryland and the Department of Recreation, Parks & Tourism, in a joint partnership, offer a year-round program for athletic conditioning, training, and competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities who are at least 8 years of age. Currently, Special Olympics Charles County offers a chance for athletes to compete in 11 Olympic-style sports throughout the year. Volunteers and coaches are always needed to assist with programs and events.
